APC Replies Atiku, Says PDP Era Policies Responsible for Nigeria’s Current Challenges
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed recent comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accusing both the PDP and APC of contributing to insecurity and rising hardship in the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the party’s spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the APC said Atiku lacked the moral standing to absolve himself of blame for Nigeria’s long-standing economic and security challenges.
According to Oladejo, the former vice president played a central role in policies implemented during the PDP administration from 1999 to 2007, particularly the privatization programme, which he claimed led to the collapse of several state-owned enterprises and loss of jobs.
“Many of the economic foundations that contributed to the country’s present difficulties were laid during the PDP years, in which Atiku was a major actor,” the statement read.
The APC further argued that several security and governance problems currently facing the country began under the PDP administration, including the rise of Boko Haram and widespread corruption allegations.
“Boko Haram evolved into a major national security threat during the PDP era. Issues of corruption and mismanagement were also prominent features of that period,” the statement added.
Oladejo also questioned Atiku’s criticism of the current administration, saying the former vice president had contested multiple presidential elections without successfully implementing his own development agenda in his home state of Adamawa.
The party maintained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is implementing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, rebuilding security structures, and addressing systemic issues accumulated over decades.
“President Tinubu is undertaking critical reforms to reset the economy and strengthen national security. These efforts are part of long-term solutions to challenges inherited from past administrations,” the statement said.
The Lagos APC advised Atiku to “take responsibility” for his role in previous administrations rather than, in their words, “attempting to rewrite history.”
The statement concluded by urging Nigerians to remain patient as the federal government continues the implementation of its reform agenda.
