Belgium Calls Moroccan Autonomy Initiative Very Good Basis for Mutually Acceptable Solution

Following talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Cultural Institutions, Bernard Quintin, affirmed Belgium’s strong support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, first presented in 2007.

Quintin described the initiative as "a serious and credible effort by Morocco" and a "very good basis for a solution accepted by all parties." During the briefing, he highlighted that the discussions with Minister Bourita had allowed him to "understand the ins and outs of the autonomy plan" and realize the “existential nature” of this issue for Morocco. He emphasized, “We know how important of an issue this is for Morocco."

Quintin also noted a shift in the stance of some prominent European and international partners on this matter, stating that Morocco and Belgium “will continue to engage constructively on this subject.”

Belgium reaffirmed its full support for the United Nations process aimed at finding "a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution." Quintin reiterated Belgium’s commitment to the UN’s exclusive role in the political process, while also expressing support for "UN Security Council Resolution 2703," which underscores the responsibility of all parties in pursuing a "realistic, pragmatic, and enduring political solution based on compromise."

The Belgian minister’s remarks align with the international momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and the Autonomy Initiative.
