CAF opens race for AFCON 2028 bids
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially begun the selection process for the host of the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with three bids confirmed for the continent's biggest football competition.
CAF announced that it received official bids before the February 2026 deadline from Ethiopia, Morocco, and a joint bid by Botswana and South Africa.
The launch of the bidding process signals the start of a new hosting cycle for AFCON, as CAF continues efforts to enhance the organization and global appeal of Africa's flagship football tournament.
In addition to the 2028 edition, CAF also opened the bidding process for the 2032 and 2036 AFCON tournaments. Interested countries were required to submit comprehensive bid documents, including formal government guarantees, as part of the hosting requirements.
The successful host nation for the 2028 AFCON will be determined after CAF completes its evaluation of the submitted bids and inspection of the proposed facilities.
