FIFA clears Arthur Okonkwo for Super Eagles duty
The uncertainty surrounding Arthur Okonkwo’s international allegiance has finally been put to rest, with FIFA officially confirming his switch from England to Nigeria.
Despite recent speculation suggesting the 24-year-old goalkeeper had yet to fully commit to the Super Eagles, FIFA’s confirmation shows that all necessary processes have been completed, including clearance from England where he previously featured at youth level.
This development settles weeks of debate over Okonkwo’s international future and immediately makes him eligible to represent Nigeria.
He is now in contention for selection ahead of the Super Eagles’ upcoming fixtures, including the Unity Cup in May and high profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
The Wrexham AFC shot stopper, who has played a vital role in his club’s promotion push this season, is expected to provide strong competition in Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.
He will rival Maduka Okoye, currently with Udinese Calcio, for the number one shirt, especially with Stanley Nwabali presently out of action.
Okonkwo’s arrival adds depth and renewed competition to the Super Eagles squad as they prepare for a busy international calendar.
