Harry Kane miss against Ghana revives witch doctor pre-match curse claim
Harry Kane’s costly late miss in England’s goalless draw against Ghana has reignited discussion around a bold pre-match claim by Ghanaian traditional priest Nana Kwaku Bonsam, who vowed to prevent the England captain from scoring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
England dominated possession and created numerous chances during their Group L encounter in Boston but were unable to find a breakthrough as Ghana held firm for a valuable 0-0 draw.
Kane found himself under the spotlight after squandering England’s clearest opportunity late in the match, blasting his effort high into the stands with the goal at his mercy.
Before the game, Bonsam had attracted widespread attention by publicly declaring that he was using spiritual powers to stop the Bayern Munich striker from scoring against the Black Stars.
The well-known Ghanaian priest insisted he was not seeking to cause Kane any serious harm but claimed he was working to ensure the striker would be ineffective against his country.
Speaking ahead of the match, Bonsam said: “I am working on Harry Kane.
“I have shown what I am capable of before, so I know what work I must do to stop him.
“I am very famous for my predictions.
“I am not wishing him serious injury. It will be just enough to stop him against my country.
“I will do my work so that it can help Ghana.”
Following Kane’s frustrating evening in front of goal, the comments quickly resurfaced on social media, with some fans jokingly linking the miss to Bonsam’s warning.
England finished the match with 18 shots, but only four were on target as Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled to convert their dominance into goals.
The defining moment arrived in the closing stages when Kane was presented with a golden opportunity to secure victory, only to send his effort sailing over the crossbar.
While many supporters referenced Bonsam’s pre-match prediction, others credited Ghana’s disciplined defensive display and England’s wasteful finishing for the result.
Bonsam is no stranger to controversy, having previously claimed he played a role in Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury problems before Ghana faced Portugal at the 2014 World Cup.
Although there is no evidence to support claims of supernatural influence, Kane’s missed chance and England’s blunt attacking display have added fresh fuel to a debate that continues to capture attention beyond the football pitch.
