NTF-CBN Tennis Championship returns to Abuja as launchpad for youth talent

The Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has announced the return of the 46th edition of the Senior Open Tennis Championship, set to begin in Abuja on Monday, July 21, with finals scheduled for Saturday, July 26, at Package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium. Preliminary rounds kick off today, Friday, July 18.

The long-running championship, now in its fourth decade, has become a vital platform for discovering and nurturing Nigeria’s tennis talent. According to the CBN’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, the Bank sees the tournament as part of its broader commitment to youth development and nation-building.

“Over the years, this championship has helped young talents, providing them with a constructive outlet and a chance to showcase their abilities on a national stage,” Ali said during a press briefing on Wednesday, July 16.

The NTF praised the CBN’s unwavering support, which has played a crucial role in elevating Nigeria’s presence in international tennis, including at the Davis Cup and African Games.

This year’s tournament features a full lineup:

* **Men’s Singles:** 64 players

* **Women’s Singles:** 32 players

* **Doubles (Men & Women):** 32 teams each

* **Wheelchair Tennis:** 16 male and 16 female athletes

The inclusive structure reflects the organizers’ commitment to broad participation, with wheelchair categories gaining increasing visibility.

Over the years, the championship has helped launch the careers of some of Nigeria’s top tennis stars, including Sunday Maku, David Imonite, Veronica Oyibokia-Iwebema, Christy Agugbom, Sarah Adegoke, Sylvester Emmanuel, Imeh Joseph, Oyinlomo Quadri, and Marylove Edwards.

As the next generation prepares to take the court, the NTF-CBN Tennis Championship continues to stand as a cornerstone of Nigerian tennis and a trusted platform for future champions.
